Exact duplicates vs. look-alike photos: what is the difference?
When people say "duplicate photos," they usually mean two different things:
- Exact or file-level duplicates: the same image saved twice from a message thread, AirDrop, or cloud import, sometimes at different resolutions or file formats.
- Look-alike or similar shots: five frames taken two seconds apart to make sure nobody blinked, three angles of a document, or a burst of a moving pet.
In a typical iPhone library, look-alike sequences outnumber exact copies by ten to one. Merging exact copies helps, but real storage savings come from paring each five-photo sequence down to the single best frame.
How Apple's built-in Duplicates utility works (and when it is enough)
Since iOS 16, the Photos app includes a Duplicates album under Utilities. When you tap Merge, iOS keeps the highest-quality version, combines relevant metadata (such as captions, keywords, and Favorites), and moves the redundant copy to Recently Deleted.
Because Merge is designed to be safe without close visual inspection, Apple keeps its threshold conservative. If two photos are genuinely different frames taken a second apart, the built-in Duplicates album usually leaves both untouched so you do not accidentally lose a preferred expression.

Clearing look-alikes with Duplicates and Tidy Shelf in GoSwipe
GoSwipe includes two iPhone features built on Apple's on-device Apple Vision and PhotoKit frameworks, so your photos are analyzed on your phone and never uploaded:
- Open Duplicates (free). GoSwipe scans your library on your iPhone and groups both exact copies and closely related shots, such as a burst of five.
- Check the Suggested badge. In each group, the sharpest, best-composed photo is marked Suggested and left unselected, while the extras are pre-selected.
- Untick anything you want to keep, then move to the Bin. Nothing is deleted immediately. Selected extras go to the in-app Bin, where you confirm the batch through the standard iOS confirmation sheet.
- Or play a round of Tidy Shelf. If reviewing lists feels like a chore, Tidy Shelf turns look-alike clean-up into a 90-second matching game: drag photos onto shelves, match three of a kind, keep the best, and let the rest go. Free accounts get a few levels a day, and GoSwipe Pro unlocks unlimited levels.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Duplicates feature in GoSwipe really free?
Yes. Duplicates in GoSwipe on iPhone is free with or without a GoSwipe Pro subscription. You can scan, review Suggested picks, and move extras to the Bin at no cost.
Why is the Duplicates album missing in my iPhone Photos app?
iOS only shows the Duplicates utility when it has finished indexing your library (which happens while your iPhone is locked and connected to power) and has found at least one duplicate pair.
Does GoSwipe upload my photos to a server to compare faces or scenes?
No. Similarity grouping runs on your iPhone using Apple Vision and PhotoKit. Photos, videos, faces, and location metadata never leave your device.
What if GoSwipe pre-selects a photo I still want to keep?
Simply tap the photo to untick it before moving the group to the Bin. Even after you move items to the Bin and confirm deletion through iOS, they stay in Recently Deleted in your Photos app for 30 days.
