Step 1: see what is actually using the space
Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage. After a moment the bar at the top breaks storage into categories such as Apps, Photos, Messages and System, and a list of apps sorted by size appears below. Start with the biggest item rather than guessing.
Under the bar, iOS also lists recommendations, such as Offload Unused Apps or reviewing large attachments. Tap Show All to read each one before you enable it.
Step 2: delete in this order
| What | Where to look | Why it helps | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large videos | Photos → Collections → Media Types → Videos | A few long clips can outweigh thousands of photos | Anything you cannot re-record |
| Screenshots | Photos → Collections → Media Types → Screenshots | Thousands of small files add up | Tickets, codes you still need |
| Duplicates and burst shots | Photos → Collections → Utilities → Duplicates, or GoSwipe Duplicates | Five near-identical shots rarely need to be kept | Keep the best frame |
| Recently Deleted | Photos → Collections → Utilities → Recently Deleted | Deleted items still use space for up to 30 days | Last chance to recover |
| Messages attachments | Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Messages → Review Large Attachments | Old videos and photos sent in chats pile up | Deleting here cannot be undone |
| Unused apps | Settings → General → iPhone Storage, tap an app | Offload keeps documents and data | Delete only removes data too |
| Downloads | Files → Downloads, and Safari downloads | Forgotten PDFs and installers | Anything not backed up |
If you use iCloud Photos, deleting a photo on the iPhone deletes it everywhere. Back up first and keep what you cannot replace. iCloud storage works differently from the phone's own storage.
Step 3: clear photos and videos faster
Photos is often the largest category and the easiest to shrink. These guides cover each part in detail:
- How to find and delete large videos
- How to delete all screenshots
- How to delete duplicate and similar photos
- A four-phase cleanup for a 10,000-photo camera roll
GoSwipe helps with each of them: Videos mode plays clips with sound, Albums mode includes Screenshots, Duplicates is free, and Tidy Shelf turns look-alike cleanup into a 90-second game. Swipes are queued in the Bin and you confirm before iOS deletes anything.
Free to start
Free up gigabytes without guessing.
Start with videos and screenshots, review the Bin, and confirm through iOS.
What not to delete
- System data. You cannot delete it manually, and it shrinks on its own when iOS needs room.
- Backups you have not tested. Keep one copy of important photos before deleting the original.
- Apps whose data is not in iCloud. Offload keeps data; Delete removes it.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my iPhone storage full when I have few photos?
Videos, Messages attachments, apps and their data, and System data can use more than photos. Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage to see the real breakdown.
Does deleting photos free up space right away?
Not completely. Deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days and still use space until you delete them there.
Will freeing up phone storage also free iCloud storage?
They are separate meters, but with iCloud Photos on, deleting a photo or video removes it from iCloud as well once it leaves Recently Deleted.
Is it safe to offload apps?
Offloading removes the app but keeps its documents and data, so you can reinstall later. Deleting an app removes its data too.
What is the fastest single thing to delete?
Usually a few long videos. Check them first with the steps in our guide to finding large videos.
